First-Timers

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US at The New London Community of Mindfulness.

First time here? Here’s What to Expect:

This Sangha (group of practitioners and learners) generally follows the format and
teachings of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, the Tibetan teachings of H.H. The Dalai
Lama and Pema Chodron, and the Theravadan schools of Vipassana or Insight
Meditation.

If you wish, you may remove your shoes when you take a seat. You will see a basket
for offering your contribution, if you are able. Suggested donation is $5.
When we bow to the Buddha statue or to each other, we are not bowing to any deity
but to the awakened or buddha-nature present in us all. Bowing connotes respect and
gratitude and helps us focus on this special time.

We will all bow when the bell is rung for 30 minutes of sitting meditation, which will end
with a bell. Then we will begin about 20 minutes of slow walking meditation followed by
a bell to begin faster walking. We meditate while moving, not trying to get anywhere or
reach a goal. There will be a bell and we then return to our seats, bow and sit as a
group.

Next will be a reading and an opportunity to share a short response. There is an
invitation to bow in and speak when you wish, but no cross talking please. Please
speak from your heart, avoid dominating the time, and bow out when finished so that
all who wish are able to speak. Speaking, however, is not a requirement. You are
always welcome to remain silent.
We may at some point enjoy chanting!

Some of us often walk to the Washington Street Coffee House after the Tuesday
morning session. Please join us!

If you let us know, we will add your name to the email list, so that you will get a
reminder and the reading in advance.

Of the three jewels, Buddha (awakening), Dharma (teachings) and Sangha, the
Buddha said that Sangha was most precious.
